Competitions & Tournaments

Competitions and Tournaments are at the very core of rugby. By its very nature rugby is a competitive sport and having the right competitions and tournaments ensures that teams of all standards participate at the appropriate level, and in matches which have a meaning beyond the full time whistle.
The RFU’s Rugby Events and Competitions Department is responsible for the successful delivery of appropriate competition structures. These incorporate all clubs from the elite to community level across the country, and includes age grade competitions as well. It also helps deliver representative matches and leisure rugby activities.
The Championship, at level 2 of the RFU's National League Structure, was introduced in 2009-10 as a 12-team league, just above National League 1 (level 3). With fewer teams, the league has encouraged all clubs to raise their standard of rugby as they aim for promotion to the Aviva Premiership.
The ever-changing sporting and social landscape in the country requires innovative thinking to develop competitions that fire the imagination of players, supporters, sponsors and the media. This ultimately helps the game continue to grow and flourish. With increasing competition from other sports and leisure activities, rugby works hard to provide exciting and vibrant competitions for all of its stakeholders.
In the same way that the game continues to develop, we will be continually developing our competitions to meet the anticipated and actual needs of all those involved in the game. To reflect this, the Competitions and Tournaments section of the website will evolve and resources will be updated regularly to best meet the needs of players, administrators and supporters at all levels of the game.
As part of this process the RFU is currently in the middle of a review of the adult and age grade competition structures. This is with the aim of ensuring our structures are fit for purpose leading into the Rugby World Cup in 2015.
Within this section you will find information on all levels of Rugby competitions, covering everything from the Aviva Premiership final to the Natwest Schools Cup. To get an overview of any of these competitions please select the relevant link on the left of the page.
