Schools work hard to encourage children to stay active. This becomes an ever increasing challenge as their lifestyles and leisure habits change. Rugby union provides an opportunity for primary schools to meet this challenge as it is a game for all and the RFU has tools and resources to attract children. Rugby union is higher profile, more visible, more attractive and cooler than ever to primary school children.
The Rugby Journey
Sports participation in the primary to secondary school transition decreases and rugby is no different. However the Rugby Journey seeks to link together the places where the game is played. The rugby network helps primary schools to link not only to their local clubs but also to secondaries in order to keep young people on that journey of healthy fun activity.
As part of Choose Rugby, the new programme encouraging people to try the game, there are regularly updated videos and other information that can be used to engage children.
Talking to your own school players
There is also the chance for you to stay in touch with children attracted by Tag rugby in your own school rugby club. All member schools now get the benefit of their own rugby website on which they can talk to their own club members and use for cross curricular work. They can upload match reports and stories written by children, have a news section for the school or set up specific year group or team pages.
