Year 7 Lesson Plans

The following lesson plans provide detailed information on how to use rugby to provide safe, fun and exciting sessions for your pupils. For further information on how and why this scheme of work has been developed, download the scheme's introduction and rationale (PDF 569kB).

One Demonstrate the principles of warm up, cool down, attack and defence. Developing agility, balance, coordination, hand and eye coordination, through the game of ‘End Ball’.

Two Apply the principles of warm up, cool down, attack and defence. Introduce the Laws of Tag Rugby. i.e. Tagging, offside and forward passing. Apply 1st ‘Principle of Play’ – ‘Go Forward’. Introduce codes of conduct.

Three To improve the consistency, quality and choice of skills used. Introduce principles of attack when to penetrate or out flank. Players to identify strengths and areas for development within own team.

Four Adapt evasive and handling skills to different situations. Successfully use a range of tactics to outwit your opponents. Continue to emphasise ‘Go Forwards’ whilst introducing the 2nd Principle of Play’ –SUPPORT.

Five To improve the consistency, quality and choice of skills used. Adapt and develop the basic skills. Developing evasion and support. Passing, fixing, creating time and space for the receiver.

Six To improve the consistency, quality and choice of skills used. Adapt and develop the basic skills of attack, outwitting an opponent. Select and apply tactics and strategies successfully with an understanding of width and depth in a 2v1 situation.

Seven To improve the consistency, quality and choice of skills used. Learn the importance of feints and acceleration when trying to outwit an opponent. Understanding of width and depth in a 2v1 situation. Help pupils explore the basic principles of defence.

Eight Help pupils explore the basic principles of defence, e.g. denial of time and space, pressure, open gate, tackle, cover and regain possession. Introduce, how to put an attacker in a position so that the defender can make a ‘Tackle’ easily (Marking an opponent). Refereeing a game.
