Affiliation and Insurance

The RFU provides free player accident insurance for all university rugby clubs, offering a crucial service to support student rugby. This central funding scheme was approved by the RFU Council in 2006, meaning all university teams can be covered against injury and accidents on the field of play.

The RFU Insurance Policy covers male and female, league, merit, intra / inter-mural friendlies, contact and non-contact, and even composite or occasional teams.

To qualify for the cover it is necessary to complete the following documents below and return them to the RFU Students' Department. It is essential that all forms are completed correctly in order to qualify for the insurance so get in touch if any assistance is required.

Application documents

  • Reciprocal Funding Agreement (MS Word DOC 80kB) – as university rugby clubs are inextricably linked to university athletic unions for funding and finance, many do not manage their own accounts and thus the RFU needs a guarantee that any previous investment that the AU/SU has provided is directly benefitting the university rugby club
  • University clubs are obliged to sign the reciprocal funding agreement in order to receive free insurance. This document applies to men’s teams only. The deadline to return the signed form is November 1, 2011
  • All women’s university rugby clubs are required to complete Form 4 (MS Office Word DOC 87KB) to affiliate with the RFUW and thus receive free insurance cover. Form 4 – University 1st and 2nd Team Affiliation should be returned to the RFUW administration department.
  • Affiliation with the RFUW does not only give teams compulsory insurance but also ensures that all players and officials are playing under the guidelines and regulations set out by the RFUW, making matches safer and fairer. Affiliation for women's university rugby teams with the RFUW is quick and easy and is explained in the University Affiliation Process diagram (MS Word DOC 34kB) and invitation letter
  • University Team Activity Record (MS Word DOC 66kB) – It is important for university rugby clubs to provide up-to-date activity record details for the previous season. Alternatively, if the university is completing a development plan (MS Office Excel DOC 376KB), this information can be entered on the new plan template
  • Permanent Club Contact Details (MS Excel DOC 102kB) - It is also important that the RFU has a constant communication channel with all university rugby clubs, so providing details for various positions within the club is essential. Completing this form is also part of the affiliation process for the SRFU. Alternatively, if the university is completing a development plan, this information can be entered on the new plan template
