| King helps kickstart rugby in Lambeth. | |||
England rugby star Alex King will join the Sweet Chariot Tour next week to help the RFU launch a new club in Lambeth. The London Wasps fly half will be visiting a coaching session for local children at Brockwell Park with the Webb Ellis Cup on Monday, March 22. The trophy is on a four-month tour of the country for people to celebrate the World Cup victory and as part of the RFU’s commitment to take the game to new communities. The Union’s coaches teamed up with the local authority earlier this season to introduce the game to primary and secondary schools in the borough. Now the aim is to develop rugby in after-school sessions and then to launch a rugby club in the borough with the help of local volunteers. The model being used by RFU’s Rugby Development Officers and Lambeth Sports Development Officer Rodney Craig is the successful Southwark Tigers club that thrives nearby. Young players from six local schools will be put through their paces by King and the coaching team in Brockwell Park, where the World Cup will be on show from 8.30am to 11.30am. “Bringing the Cup to Brockwell Park gives us a fantastic opportunity to build off the excitement created by England’s victory in November,” said Kent RDO Matt Mitchell. “We hope that this will inspire the local community to help build and maintain a new rugby club within the area for future generations to use.” More than 350,000 people across the country have seen the trophy in its first six weeks on the road as part of the Sweet Chariot Tour. The tour stops off at more than 250 clubs, schools and shopping centres to give people the chance to see the trophy and encourage them to take up the game. The tour takes place in association with sponsors EA Sports, Ford, Holiday Inn, Land Rover and Lucozade Sport. Monday’s initiative is also being supported by Royal & Sun Alliance, who back a series of rugby development days throughout the country each year. Information about the Sweet Chariot tour is also available on the RFU Community Rugby hotline 0906 6800805 and www.rfu.com King and RFU rugby development staff will be available for interview and media are welcome to attend the Brockwell Park event. Please register your interest with Simon Mills at the RFU Press Office on 07702 661214. |
