The Sweet Chariot Tour takes on a whole new ball game when it arrives
in Cambridge next week.
The Webb Ellis Cup won by England last November is travelling the country
to celebrate the World Cup victory and attract new recruits to the game.
The tour is being hosted by Cambridge University - one of the RFU's 35
constituent bodies - on Wednesday, May 12.
But with pitch improvements taking place at their Grange Round headquarters,
the World Cup will be at the Fenners cricket ground on the first day
of the game between Cambridge and Middlesex.
The Webb Ellis Cup is on a four-month tour of the country that stops
off at more than 250 clubs, schools and shopping centres in all to give
people the chance to see the trophy and encourage them to take up the
game.
So far it has been seen by more than 750,000 people and thousands more
will have the chance to join in at Fenners from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
The university is hosting the tour in conjunction with Cambridge rugby
club, who are celebrating an unparalled season of success.
They won promotion to Powergen London Division One after beating Barnes
21-19 in the play-offs, defeated Hadleigh in the Eastern Counties Cup
final and lifted the Cambridgeshire Cup after victory against Shelford,
while their young players beat Colchester in the final of the Eastern
Counties Colts Cup.
Their Grantchester Road ground will host the tour from 4.30pm onwards
with all local clubs invited and a reception planned for the evening.
All the events on the Cambridge leg of the Sweet Chariot Tour are open
to the public. Print and broadcast media are welcome to visit any of
the events but are asked to register their interest with Simon Mills
at the RFU on 07702 661214.
