Following the success of the England team in winning the
Rugby World Cup 2003, the Rugby Football Union is promoting and delivering
the ‘Sweet Chariot Tour,’ which will see the Webb Ellis Cup
visiting Constituent Bodies, clubs, schools and colleges throughout England
from February to May 2004.
The high profile, unique nature of the Webb Ellis Cup will help the
RFU to enhance the delivery of a wide variety of participation projects
as part of the Rugby Making an IMPACT strategy.
Each CB will have the Webb Ellis Cup in its territory for two or three
days and they will target projects focused upon:
- INCLUSION – helping to ensure that Rugby Union
is accessible to all sections of the community.
- VOLUNTEERS – the
opportunity exists to help to recruit and train new volunteers as well
as to reward and recognize current key
volunteers who work
so hard to keep Grassroots, Community Rugby Union in a healthy state.
- SCHOOL/CLUB
LINKS – forming the basis of the RFU development strategy
at Junior and Youth levels and the school/club relationship is crucial in
ensuring that youngsters carry on their participation in Rugby Union into
adulthood;
events will be held at clubs and schools in all counties to help cement these
links.
- THE EMPHASIS IS UPON INVOLVING NEW PARTICIPANTS TO THE GAME (participants
being players, coaches, referees, teachers, spectators, administrators
and volunteers of all kinds). Rugby Union is now the second most
popular sport in England and recently over 750,000 people watched
the England
team parade the Webb Ellis Cup in London.
