SOS Romania Rugby

08 May 2002

In the next few weeks  SOS Romania - Kit Aid sponsored by the IRB will be collecting rugby kit from over 50 UK schools/clubs in the Home Counties area in order to send out a massive delivery of new/used kit to Romania in mid May. Quantities in the order of 1000+ pairs of boots , 2000 shirts/shorts, 400 balls, etc will be sent out to Bucharest to assist the Romanian Rugby Federation in relaunching rugby in Romania and getting the sport into schools. Further deliveries of a similar quantity will take place in October. Alongside kit, the SOS Romania project has also assisted in three schools touring Romania this summer and an initial party of 4 coaches going out in July to coach the coaches - something else desperately needed in Romania. Talks are taking place with the RFU to massively expand the coaching resource idea. There will also be new kit kindly donated by the IRB and the Canterbury Kit Company and the whole project is sponsored by the IRB and the Massive Organisation. Please see our brand new website for further details/updates - www.sosromaniasrugby.org

Schools, clubs, celebrities and sponsors are flocking to join in the scheme. Gregor Townsend and Kenny Logan are both kindly supporting the project and more celebrities will be announced soon on our website. Not one school/club or celebrity asked to participate so far has declined(see list of donor schools/clubs on our website) plus schools/clubs are now volunteering via our website.  THe 50 schools/clubs we already have are just the tip of the iceberg when you consider there are 3000+ schools/clubs in the UK then the possibilities of supplying huge amounts of good quality kit around the world in future are there for all to see. Collection packs for the 50 schools/clubs already on board are in the post  and first collections will start in late April. Once the needs of Romania are met the intention will be to move on to support other needy/emerging rugby countries/projects like the Future Hope Project in India and the "fight drugs through rugby" campaign in Estonia.

We are still looking for further sponsors for Transport to Romania plus storage in the UK so if you are a rugby fanatic sitting on the Board of a transport or storage company and want to put something worthwhile back into rugby then please contact me on 0208-776-2085.
