Better weekend for English clubs

20 October 2002

The second weekend of Heineken Cup action saw the English teams improve their standings with four of the six sides getting victories and just two going down to defeats. The losers were Sale Sharks and Northampton Saints. Sale suffered a second successive defeat and now have everything to do if they are going to progress to the Quarter final stage and Northampton who looked to have earned a draw in Biarritz before conceding a penalty deep into injury time to go down 23-20. With the four wins the English sides saw their percentage increased to over 50%

The Irish move up the table dramatically as all three of their sides were victorious. Ulster and Munster were winners at home whilst Leinster scored an excellent win at Swansea.

France after a 100% performance in week one suffered two losses with Montferrand's loss at Bristol the biggest surprise.

The big losers over the weekend were Wales who saw all five of their sides go down to defeats including Swansea and Newport who suffered home defeats.
