Improvement needed

English clubs looking for Heineken improvement

Despite Leicester's success in the Heineken Cup over the last two seasons and that of Northampton the season before English clubs have struggled in this period to get out of the Group stage.

Over those three seasons when English clubs have lifted the trophy only two of the six English sides have managed to get out of the Group each season and qualify for the Quarter finals. This is in contrast to the first two years when in their first season of participation three of the four got out of the Group stage and the following season when all four sides made it to at least the Quarter finals.

Last season both Leicester Tigers and Bath won their groups to progress but the other four performed badly. Wasps and Harlequins finished third in their respective groups whilst Northampton and Newcastle Falcons finished bottom of their groups.

The question this asks, is, is the competition getting stronger or have the Premiership sides under performed?
