More dates added as Premier Rugby kicks off nationwide Gilbert Touch Rugby Festivals

28 July 2003

The Gilbert/Sportsmatch Touch Rugby Festivals kicked off this last week with the first three events being staged by London Wasps and NEC Harlequins.  Over 300 players, many of them new to rugby, took part in festivals at Cobham RFC in Surrey, Chinnor RFC in Oxfordshire and Phoenix RFC in Buckinghamshire.  These are just three of the 24 festivals that will culminate in finals at Premier Rugby club grounds in late August and September.

The festivals are being staged nationwide thanks to sponsorship from Gilbert Rugby and the continued support of Sportsmatch.  They are run in conjunction with and are open to men and women over the age of 16, with the emphasis being on fun and enjoyment.

Commenting on the Chinnor RFC and Phoenix RFC festivals, London Wasps Community Manager Toni Smyth said

"Both events were superbly organised by the host clubs and all who attended had a great day.  Everyone gets to play a bit of touch rugby, meet new people and enjoy a beer and burger at the BBQ afterwards.  The host clubs benefit from the Gilbert stash' that is left behind, the hire fee for the day and I know that both clubs have picked up a few more members.  We now have one more festival on the 10th August in Acton where teams have the chance to qualify for the Wasps finals to be played at Adams Park.  Even if they don't qualify they can be assured of a great day out!"

Premier Rugby have added three more dates to the calendar - Saracens will be holding their two festivals on Friday 22nd August at Old Albanians RFC and the following Friday 29th August at Tabard RFC, both in Hertfordshire.  Leicester Tigers are taking a festival on the road to Telford RFC in Shropshire on Sunday 14th September.  The two winners from there will go forward to the finals at Welford Road later that month.
