Falcons name team to face Tykes

23 December 2004

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby, Rob Andrew, has named his team for Monday's Zurich Premiership game against Leeds Tykes at Headingley (kick-off 2.30pm), making seven changes from the side which narrowly lost to Saracens in the Powergen Cup last Sunday.

The front row sees South African tight head Marius Hurter get a start in what is his last game for the club, and after the match the club's supporters will present the 34-year-old with a special award for his six years of service.

Hurter's inclusion sees Micky Ward drop to the bench, while Andy Long comes in at hooker for Matt Thompson and Andy Buist replaces Luke Gross in the second row, after the American picked up a knock to the shoulder.

At left wing 18-year-old Mathew Tait replaces Michael Stephenson who has a hamstring niggle, while Epi Taione starts at inside centre after Mark Mayerhofler who took a knock to his leg early in the second half against Saracens. With the former All Black set to see a consultant to assess the damage.

At scrum half James Grindal takes the place of Hall Charlton, while fit-again Matthew Burke starts at fullback in place of Joe Shaw, who was drafted in late last week for Cup action after Burke picked up a bug.
