England's young guns outscored a strong Welsh team by eight tries to three at Clifton last night, as they notched up a 50 points to 17 win. Clifton's Susie Appleby celebrated leading the side with two tries in the second half, as England Women piled on 24 unanswered points in the final 12 minutes of the match.
All eight tries came from the backs, including two for Saracens full back Vicky Massarella and one each for Wasps Amy Turner, Saracens Maggie Alphonsi, Worcester's Kat Merchant and Thirsk Sharks 17 year old centre, Michaela Staniford. Amy Turner also slotted three conversions for a personal tally of 11 points.
Commenting on the game Danny Wilson, England A Coach said:
"I am extremely pleased with the performance. We fielded a really young squad of 22 and I am delighted with the way they came together and performed last night. To score fifty points against such a strong Wales team is impressive. Our only real problem is that we will have some selection headaches when it comes to naming our Six Nations squad in January."
England were forced to make two late changes to the scheduled team to face Wales, after Shauna Vetch withdrew through injury and Sarah Beale was forced to pull out due to illness. Maggie Alphonsi and Heather Fisher joined the squad in their places.
England's next match is an Academy game away against Ireland on the 8th January. The full senior side will meet for training over the weekends of 18th/19th December and 8th/9th January before the Six Nations squad is selected in mid January. As per the men, England's first opponents in this season's Six Nations Championship are Wales. The two sides meet in Cardiff on Friday 4th February.
