Saracens academy players sign for first team squad for next season

30 June 2004

Saracens have announced the names of 11 Academy players who will become part of the 2004/05 squad.

The players will join training for two or three days a week and play an important role in Saracens Zurich A-League fixtures.

"Being a part of the squad over the next 12 months will give these youngsters a lot of experience as they develop," explained Head Coach Rod Kafer. "They will be with us for two or three days a week and feature in second team matches which we hope will give them the experience and skills that will see them push for a first team place.

"While we have been active in putting together a first team squad for the 2004/05 season, it's also important that we make sure we put plans in place for the future. That's why we have specifically looked at those in positions to succeed players over the next few years."

Props Aaron Liffchak and Tom Mercey along with hookers Stuart Philpott and Ben Wickens make up those in the front row who have been named in the squad. Dave Seymoure, Donald Barrell and Stephan Armitage are three players in the back row to be included.

In the backline, Adam Powell is a fly-half with Phil Ellis and Craig Wilson in the centres. Winger Andy Edwards is also included in the squad.

In recent weeks, Saracens have also completed the signings of young England internationals Ben Russell (fly-half), Joe Bedford (scrum half) and Andy Kyriacou (hooker) - giving the 2004/05 squad an exciting blend of youth and experience.
