England Under 16s in 12-try Italian romp

England Under 16s coasted to a 74-21 victory over an Italy Under 17 A side in Valpollicela tonight, full-back Samuel Smith leading the 12-try onslaught by crossing five times.

Wingman Nathaniel Lowers also collected a hat trick, while other tries came from flanker William Fraser, scrum-half Oliver Frost and wingman William Hurrell.

Fly-half Elliot Read also scored a try and landed seven conversions.

The result was especially satisfying in that the team included 11 changes to the side that had beaten Wales 24-22 on Saturday in Llandovery and although the calibre of the opposition was rather different, the re-shaped side put down plenty of markers for the remaining games.

Smith, son of former Fylde, Wasps and England wingman Simon, has clearly inherited his father's pace and deadly finishing skills, his switch from wing to full-back given him freedom to apply those talents intelligently and effectively.

"The Italian lads showed plenty of spirit, but they eventually ran out of gas," said Team Manager George Squires. "We were better technically and more skilful, which meant that we had control of the ball for long spells.

"Happily everyone came through OK, so we will be in a position to pick from strength for Saturday's game at Trento against the full Italy Under 17 side."
