January 2nd, 2007

The England Women Under 19s squad will now play the USA as well as two tests against Canada in March and April this year.

The Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) have added the extra fixture to provide more competitive international competition for England's up and coming players.

England will play the USA on Sunday March 25th before taking on Canada on Wednesday April 4th and Sunday April 8th. All fixtures will be played at RAF Halton, near Aylesbury.

The Under 19s squad of 30 includes 10 players who also represented England at this level last season. In 2006 they played two tests against Canada in Canada winning 27-5, before conceding a 20-13 defeat.

Gary Street, England Under 19s Programme Manager, said: "The England Under 19s squad is a very important part of our development programme as we look to the long term development of our players for the next two World Cups in 2010 and 2014.

"Our development programme is clearly working as we currently have 19 players in the Elite 44 who have all played England Under 19s rugby. This includes the like of Maggie Alphonsi who was this week named the IRB's Women's Personality of the Year. She also played in the recent Rugby World Cup in Canada."

England Under 19s will be coached by Giselle Mather (head coach) and Ian Griffin (assistant coach).
