Stoneygate elect first woman chairman

30 November 2007

Stoneygate have elected their first-ever female chairman in Sarah Orchard, a former captain of the Leicester club's women's team.

Orchard, a 35-year-old commercial manager for Honeywell, began her involvement at the Midlands Five East (South) club as a player but soon got involved in organising social events and was then invited onto the committee.

"It has been a gradual progression, from helping to organise social events to attending commitee meetings," Orchard said.

"The club were looking to get some new blood into running the club and I was asked if I would stand for chairman at the annual meeting. I think the fact that I am still playing still helps because the majority of people involved in committees tend to be former players.

"There were one or two eyebrows raised from some of the older members of the club initially but the committee and players have been very supportive."

Orchard, who has been involved with Leicestershire's Go Play Rugby inititiave, is believed to be the first female club chairman in Leicestershire.

Though Stoneygate are having a mixed season in their league, the women's team are going well in their league, Championship Midlands Two, and are aiming for a top three finish.
