Newbold-on-Avon win competitions appeal

30 December 2008

A RUGBY Football Union competitions panel this evening ordered the EDF Energy Senior Vase fourth round tie between Loughborough and Newbold-on-Avon to be replayed.

The original tie earlier this month was abandoned at half-time with Loughborough leading 15-6.

The competition organising committee subsequently disqualified Newbold after they decided that the match had been abandoned by Leicestershire referee John Hill for reasons other than weather conditions.

But the RFU panel decided that various factors contributed to the abandonment. The panel also agreed that it was better if the result of the game could be decided on the pitch rather than in the committee room.

The panel upheld Newbold's appeal and the replay, on a date to be agreed, was ordered as the match was abandoned when less than 60 minutes had been played.

The winners will have home advantage against Bridgnorth in the fifth round on January 17.

The competitions appeal panel, which sat at the Coventry M6 Holiday Inn Hotel, comprised Robert Horner (chairman), Peter Rhodes and Bob Taylor.
