Twickenham the stage for O2 Scrum on the Beach final

19 September 2009

  • Paul Sackey and Austin Healey to host finale of summer-long competition
  • Final is part of 02’s Play On campaign designed  to keep 16-24 year-olds involved in rugby

The winners of O2’s Scrum on the Beach events will meet at Twickenham Stadium on Friday September 25 as twelve teams play for the title of 2009 O2 Scrum on the Beach Champions.

The winning teams from each of this Summer’s eight events will be joined by four additional teams at a tag rugby event hosted by England rugby stars Paul Sackey and Austin Healey.

Mark Stevenson, Head of Sponsorship, O2 said: “The response to this year’s O2 Scrum on the Beach has been phenomenal and we’ve been very impressed with the level of talent from the teams that have taken part this summer.

“The events have given a huge number of people access to rugby and we hope inspired some of them to get more involved in the sport.  The final will give those top teams a fantastic opportunity to really put their skills to the test, and where better to do that, but at Twickenham Stadium, the Home of England Rugby.”

O2 Scrum on the Beach is part of the RFU’s Play On campaign, sponsored by O2, which aims to keep 16-24 year-olds involved in and playing the game as they move from school into higher education and beyond.

Since its launch in May 2008, Play On, which is also supported by the National Sports Foundation, has created a network of more than 1,400 O2 Pathfinders to guide young players on their rugby journey, promoted rugby directly to thousands of teenagers and created more teams, competitions, coaches and referees to sustain the growth of the game.
