English Divisions South West see off Italy A at Wellington College

  • South West lads maintain England Divisions winning run
  • Second half points seal victory

England Divisions (South West) 18 Italy A 10

A second half penalty from centre Charlie Attis and a try from full back Jack Arundel sealed a fine win for the England Divisions (South West) side against a heavier and purposeful Italy A in their final match of the Wellington College International Festival at the top Crowthorne, Berkshire, based public school.

The teams were tied 10-10 at the interval but a tigerish second half performance from the Divisions side produced the winning points to maintain the English Divisions three match unbeaten record over the six day festival.

"We just said at half time, 'Look there's a game here we can win,' and as we were playing up the hill in the second half I thought we might be in a bit of trouble but the boys worked hard and dug deep, defended well and they’ll remember that for many a day,” summed up the Divisions team manager Craig Barrow.

“A few of the lads were trying to impress today to say that they should have been in the England U16 A squad and to beat Italy U17s is fantastic and they are a credit to their schools and counties and we are well pleased."

Good work in the Italian 22 from Attis, scrum half and skipper Ollie Devoto plus prop Adam Jamieson led to the opening score when loose-head prop Nick Boyall powered his way over the line.

While Devoto converted Italy had drawn level within two minutes when having forced their way into the Divisions 22 full back Simon Soffiato broke a tackle close to the Divisions line to dab down and for fly half Marco Fontanesi to add the extras.

And, four minutes later, Fontanesi was back in action stroking over a penalty to put his side 10-7 in front.

But the Divisions were all-square by the break when Attis banged over a 35-metre penalty when the Italians went over the top at a ruck to square the match 10-10 at half-time.

Having missed a chance four minutes earlier Attis eventually put the Divisions back in front with a 50th minute spot kick and they sealed their victory with six minutes to go.

Full back Soffiato failed to hold a clearance kick allowing Divisions left-wing Anthony Fitch to hack on the loose ball and chase it up deep into the Italian half.

From the ensuing ruck Arundel was put away wide on the left by Attis for the final unconverted try.
