England’s rising star Christian Wade has been surprised by his rapid ascend in the Sevens game after becoming a key player in Ben Ryan’s squad ahead of the Emirates Airline London Sevens on May 22/23.

The London Wasps wing burst onto rugby’s world stage with seven tries in his second IRB Sevens World Series event in George, South Africa making him joint-top scorer at the tournament.

Speaking exclusively to RFU TV, the 19-year-old said he is relishing the chance to play in front of big crowds at the London Sevens after being a keen spectator just 12 months ago.

"Last year I watched the World Series on TV," he said.

"I followed it all the way through and thought what a great opportunity to play in front of a home crowd and in six different countries around the world.

"Then this year, after playing in the Middlesex Sevens, I got called up to train but even then I didn’t think I would make the squad because it was only the young players there and the older superstars would come back in.

"I did pretty well at training and got picked for Dubai and George but I never thought I would be in this position today."

Wade, who will also represent England Under 20s at the IRB Junior World Championship this June, has maintained his impressive form to bag 19 tries overall this season and is looking for more in front of a vociferous home crowd at Twickenham.

He added: "With the Superhero theme it’s going to be a great atmosphere for the fans, it should be good day for the players too."
