- Ben Ryan determined to retain London Sevens crown
- England Sevens head coach says the squad are ready to win
England Sevens coach Ben Ryan is determined to defend his side’s Emirates Airline London Sevens title in front of a bumper Twickenham crowd this weekend.
The 12 best sevens sides in the world come to England Rugby headquarters for two days of high-octane action on May 22/23, with England going all out repeat last season’s stunning last-minute victory over New Zealand.
As England’s only home fixture on the IRB Sevens World Series, Ryan says it is a tournament he never wants to lose.
Speaking exclusively to RFU TV, he said: "We’re going to have a strong side, we’re going to have some very exciting players and we’re going to do everything we can to defend London.
"In London it’s a bit more personal, we only get one home game a year and for the next however many years I want to make sure this is a priority tournament and we win it every time."
Former England representative level back Ryan, 38, has named a strong squad for London with emerging talents such as Christian Wade, Guinness Premiership stars such as Tom Varndell and Micky Young, and experienced sevens campaigners such as Ben Gollings and Ollie Phillips.
After some narrow defeats this season, Ryan is confident his side will perform to their best at Twickenham.
He added: "I’m pleased with the squad, we’ve had quite a new group and they’ve come on really well.
"I think they’ll get better and better, with some additions for London to pump us up too."
