England have turned to a familiar face to prepare for the Rugby World Cup. Specialist speed and power coach Faye Downey has been working with the squad at their Surrey base ahead of them flying to New Zealand on August 29.

Downey, who runs Oracle Elite Performance Management Ltd, helped England ahead of the 2007 tournament and has since done individual work with players from Leicester Tigers, London Irish, London Wasps and Harlequins.

The RFU’s Senior National Fitness Coach Calvin Morriss said: “We are very fortunate to have Faye involved and her skills complement the rest of the strength and conditioning team. She has great expertise in the speed and power field and the players are benefitting massively.”

Downey has also worked for UK Athletics preparing athletes for the Athens Olympic Games and numerous World Championships. Faye continued this work at the English Institute of Sport, training athletes and players in a range of Olympic sports from athletics to canoe slalom and rowing.

Oracle Elite Performance Management was established in 2006 where Downey works with professional athletes, Premiership football and rugby clubs and extreme sports.

“I’m delighted to have been asked to return and help prepare the players for the biggest tournament in world rugby,” said Downey.

“I'm predominantly working with the backs which lends its self to my speed and power expertise. It’s impressive to see how hard the players and coaching staff are working and it's great to be part of that team.”
