Daily Mail RBS Schools November review: North

06 December 2011

  • Competitive, high-pressure rugby still to come
  • "Big hitters" in opposition in the North

With the Daily Mail RBS Schools Cup reaching Round 6 tomorrow and teams now into the last 32 of the nationwide competition, the once-distant dream of an outing on the famous Twickenham turf on Schools Day 2012 is starting to take on a more tangible form.

There is a good deal of competitive, high-pressure rugby still to be played before the April 4 showpiece, but tomorrow’s batch of games in the Under 18 and Under 15 Cup and Vase sections underline that the cream is rising to the top.

Many of the ‘big hitters’ of Northern schools rugby are in opposition in the two Cup competitions and in an unusual number of cases, there are a handful of hopefuls who are still campaigning on two fronts to claim a place at Twickenham.

The decision to make the finals of the two Vase competitions part of the Schools Day jamboree has multiplied the chances of one school getting two teams to that festival of schools rugby and no less than six schools will have two teams with Twickenham ambitions in action tomorrow.

On the Cup front, St Peter’s, York, RGS Newcastle and Lymm High School are still boasting a twin-pronged assault, while Harrogate Grammar School, Crossley Heath from Halifax and Stockport Grammar School have joint interests in the Cup and the Vase.

All are familiar with progress in the Daily Mail RBS, whereas for five schools, the thrill of a run in the competition is a novelty which is sure to be causing a ripple of excitement.

Barnsley Sports Academy and Rossall from Fleetwood are involved in the Under 18 Vase, while Driffield School, Holmes Chapel and Rishworth are also making headway at the first attempt in the Under 15 Vase.

It all adds up to a very exciting programme tomorrow (Wednesday, December 7) if the cold weather relents.
