The England Under 18 Clubs and Schools squad come together for the first time this weekend at Bromsgrove School, Worcester to lay the foundations for their encounter against Ireland Under 18 Schools in April.

Players have been tracked since September 2010 but squad selection concluded at the Divisional Festival (February 18-20) when a high standard of rugby resulted from having both international honours and regional pride at stake.

“There were some difficult choices to make because the quality of players on show was so high,” said Paul Mullan, England Under 18 Clubs and Schools Head Coach.

“We are very pleased about the structure and variety within the chosen 22.  The pack is competitive but also very athletic and it is matched by pace and force out wide.

“There is a lot of work to be done between now and our first fixture but we certainly have the potential to be a very strong side.”

The England Under 18s Clubs and Schools team rewards players who have advanced within their Constituent Bodies. It allows talented players to achieve international honours while continuing to pursue academic and career interests and keeps them on the selectors’ radar.

As well as intensive training sessions, this weekend’s programme also incorporates medical examinations, including CRY screening (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and an Anti-Doping presentation.

The squad will meet for a second training camp, also at Bromsgrove School on March 26-27, ahead of their warm up game against Worcester Warriors Academy Under 19 on April 3 (1pm).

Final training takes place at Surrey Sports Park, Guildford on April 8 before the England team play Ireland Under 18 Clubs at Ashbourne RFC, near Dublin on April 10 (12 noon).
