Getting to know England U20: Andy Short

04 March 2011

  • England U20 and Worcester Warriors wing Andy Short on rugby and relaxing
  • Former England U18 international lifts lid on his international teammates

Four tries against Italy in this season's U20 6 Nations clash at Bath's Recreation Ground announced Worcester Warriors' Andy Short onto the international scene.

The 19-year-old centre-cum-wing is enjoying a fabulous season with both club and country as Warriors lead the Championship race and England remain unbeaten in the 6 Nations. RFU.com caught up with Andy to find out a little more about him.

How do you like to relax outside of the rugby bubble?
I just chill out with friends and family and watch TV and films (I love films). I also play on my PS3 and head down to the driving range (although my golf is terrible!).

Best and worst trainers in the England camp.
Best? Probably myself... or more realistically Mako Vunipola or George Ford. Charlie Matthews is the worst.

If money was no object what car would you drive?
A black 1999 T reg Ford Focus with tints, obviously. That or a Shelby Mustang GT.

Favourite holiday destination?
Thailand. It’s a great place just to chill out on holiday and the scenery is amazing. There’s also some good fun to be had snorkelling and diving.

Most famous person you’ve ever met?
Dannii Minogue. I went to lunch with her, just the two of us! I was only little though, it was at a Formula 1 event. I’ve also met Jonah Lomu which was a pretty daunting experience.

Last time you laughed until you cried?
During our Portugal training camp back in December. I was listening to Rob Buchanan laugh, it’s the funniest laugh in the world, I promise.

Best banter in the U20 squad?
Ryan Bower from Leicester Tigers. We call him ‘Bowzer’. He’s quite a quiet guy but he comes out with some quality sly chat. I should also give an honourable mention to our kit-man Gaz Lester who comes a close second.

Talk us through your ideal three course meal.
Starter would be a good prawn cocktail followed by a good old Sunday roast (rare) with all the trimmings cooked by my mum and for dessert I’d go for my Nan’s homemade cheesecake.

Top three films of all time?
The Hangover, Law Abiding Citizen and Gladiator.

You’re stuck on a desert island with one luxury item, what is it?
My mobile phone.

What is the furthest you have ever run?
I did a half marathon for charity once but walked most of it. I’m not a massive fan of running as I suffer from shin splints.

Which club do you support and who’s your favourite current player?
Worcester Warriors for obvious reasons and Sam Tuitupou and Sonny Bill Williams are my favourite players at the minute.

Who dresses to impress?
Ben Ransom – but he always fails to impress.

Three songs that make you happy.
Finley Quaye – Dice, Eagle Eye Cherry – Save Tonight, Lighthouse Family – High.

Sporting idol growing up?
Jonah Lomu – I loved playing his game on the Play Station.

If you weren’t playing rugby what would you be doing?
An ice road trucker, I think it looks like an awesome job. Failing that, a helicopter pilot – I’d love to fly them all day.

Tell us something no one knows about you.
Before rugby I used to do quite a lot of motocross.
