England’s try hero against Scotland Chris Ashton has said that the crunch Pool B clash was a frustrating affair, but accepts “that’s the way it goes sometimes”.
Ashton was starved of possession throughout the game, but crucially touched down in the 77th minute of England’s 16-12 win against the Auld Enemy, with England 12-9 down at the time.
He said: “My first touch was a kick, second touch was a kick and my third touch was a try – that’s the way it goes sometimes. It’s World Cup rugby, it’s always going to be tense, Scotland made it hard for us, but we’ve come away with the win and that’s all that matters.”
The Wigan-born Northampton Saint likened the game to England’s tricky opening World Cup match against Argentina, adding:
“It was a similar game to the Argentina one. It didn’t quite go as we wanted it to go; it was windy out there and was quite messy.
“Sometimes you have to be patient, and be ready to dig yourself out of a hole – Youngsy [Ben Youngs] did it against Argentina and fortunately I was on the end of a try tonight.
“It was a frustrating game for me personally, I don’t think I touched the ball until around the 60th minute – I was chasing around hitting a few breakdowns, which I’m not very good at!”
