England’s Women have been preparing for their busy autumn international schedule against France and world champions New Zealand with a unique form of training which has seen the players moving away from the rugby pitches and taking to trampolines.
England, who take on France in a two test series in Marseille in November and then New Zealand over three matches in November and December in England, teamed up with former trampolining Olympian Jaime Moore and GB Trampolinist Coach Tracy Whittaker at the Northampton Trampoline Gymnastics Academy this week.
England’s forwards were invited to the session by England Women’s Under 20s coach Steve Halsey. The former Northampton, Bedford and London Welsh lock is a great advocate of the benefits of trampolining training. He said: “The idea of the trampolining lineout jumping session came from my own experiences of the sport. As a former player and a PE teacher I know that there is a real cross over in skills between the two disciplines.
“As part of incorporating specialist sessions for our players this season this training session was aimed at improving our forwards’ body management in the air and improving their jumping techniques. It will also help develop their height and speed confidence in the air and improve their high hand skills such as catching and manipulation of the ball, again in the air.”
England won’t have to wait long to see the benefits of the trampolining sessions as they are next in action on November 2 when they take on France in Marseille at the Jean Bouin Stadium.
