The increasing popularity of girls’ rugby union in English schools will receive a high-profile showcase this Saturday (April 28) when teams from around the country play at Twickenham Stadium on the day of the annual Army v Navy match.

Eight schools teams in the Year 7 and 8 Under 13 age group have won through from regional qualifiers to play non-contact Tag rugby at the Home of England Rugby before and during half time of the Army v Navy match which will be watched by a crowd of more than 60,000.

The RFU’s development programme in schools has boosted interest with at least 250 girls’ teams playing now that didn’t exist two years ago.

There will also be a showcase for the burgeoning contact version of the girls’ game with schools representing London South and London North playing in Under 13 and U15 age groups at nearby Richmond College in the morning.

All 12 schools involved will receive tickets to the match, have their photos taken pitchside and be treated to a tour of the World Rugby Museum at Twickenham Stadium which appropriately includes a display highlighting women’s rugby.

"This is the second year that girls’ rugby will be given an exclusive showcase at the Army v Navy match at Twickenham,” said Clare Cooper, women’s rugby development manager in London & South East.

"These Tag and contact competitions have been designed to promote and encourage rugby in schools. All the schools coming to Twickenham on Saturday are winners in their own right and we are sure they will enjoy their day."

Helenswood School and Esher High will represent London South in the U13 and U15 contact matches respectively, against two Hertfordshire schools, Beaumont (U13) and Presdales (U15).

All these four schools will warm up with a skills session led by England Women’s players. Schools from Kent, Suffolk, Cornwall, Bedfordshire, Staffordshire, Oxfordshire, Durham and Cheshire will take part in the U13 Tag matches on the Twickenham pitch.
