- Somerset RFU looking to unearth more female talent
England international Marlie Packer will be the star guest at a Somerset RFU Development Day for Under 18 and Under 15 girls on August 23 at Yatton RFC.
Packer is herself a Somerset girl having attended Yeovil College as a student. She now plays in the Women’s Premiership for Bristol Ladies and has amassed 15 caps for England, including helping the international side to winning a seventh successive Six Nations crown in March 2012.
Somerset RFU Women & Girls are looking forward to the new season which promises to build on the excellent performance of last year.
Following the 2011/12 County season no less than ten of Somerset's senior women represented the South West in the RFU Divisional Programme, including Sian Moore who captained the South West team.
Two players, Kate Newton and Sally Tuson, impressed enough to been drafted into the England Elite Playing squad for the new season – making their international debuts in May at the European Championships – whille Katie Mason has also represented England Sevens.
From the U18, Chantelle Hearn from Yeovil College went on to represent the South West as did Chantelle Miel and Georgia Phillips from the U15 squad.
The new season gets underway with the Development Day starting at 10am. Any aspiring players are warmly welcome to this session. Players attending should bring all the kit they need and a packed lunch.
Trials for the County squads will take place on 30 September at Old Reds RFC at 2pm, with the first matches, an U18 and U15 triangular tournament away to Oxfordshire and Berkshire, on October 28. Trials for the senior county squad will take place on November 4.
