Rugby teams all around the country are gearing up for the start of the new season, including RFU Championship clubs Nottingham Rugby and Leeds Carnegie who kick-off the 2012-13 campaign on Friday night.

Opening fixtures don't come much closer than Nottingham v Leeds at Meadow Lane, both sides won one-a piece last season and finished two points apart in the final league standings.

It was the Green & Whites who edged fifth place in the league table – Carnegie finished sixth – but with a new emphasis on emerging young talent, the Yorkshire men will be eager to improve on last season.

Someone who may well be hoping for the same thing is the Rugby Football Union’s Chief Executive Officer Ian Ritchie, who will be enjoying some RFU Championship action this weekend as he heads for the Midlands to watch Nottingham take on Leeds Carnegie. But having been born in the Yorkshire city, who will the former Leeds Grammar School student be supporting?

Looking forward to attending Meadow Lane – Ritchie

“I was born and bred in Leeds, and have been a Leeds United supporter all my life, so I’m somewhat torn between my professional impartiality and personal loyalties! Either way though, I’m sure the game will provide a fantastic start to the new season. Having finished only two points apart in the league table last year, I’d imagine both teams will be eager to secure the win.

“I’m very much looking forward to attending Meadow Lane on Friday for Nottingham v Leeds; a game that will mark the start of the 2012-13 RFU Championship which promises to be as exciting as ever.

“Nottingham have some fantastic facilities at Meadow Lane and I’m sure the Green & White faithful will turn out to support the home side, as will all RFU Championship supporters across the UK with their respective teams this weekend and throughout the season.”
