- England defeat Russia, Sweden, Italy & France on day one
- England to play Switzerland in final pool game on Sunday
England Women finished day one of the European Sevens Series in the Netherlands unbeaten after victories over Russia, Sweden, Italy and France.
Barry Maddocks’ side will now play Switzerland in the final round of pool games on Sunday, and as they top the table in their pool, they are in a good position to qualify for the semi-finals.
With points available that will seed teams in the final round of the European Sevens Series in Russia later this month – which also doubles up as a Rugby World Cup 2013 qualifier – England will be determined to finish top tomorrow.
England cruised past Sweden and Italy earlier today, running in 12 tries without conceding a single point, but their pool game matches against a physical Russian outfit and a more experienced France side proved tougher.
England Women’s Sevens Head Coach Maddocks said: “This has been a good day. We have been tested with two very tough games against Russia and France. Against Russia we were behind going into the second-half, but came back well. Against France, they actually dominated possession and territory for much of the game but we were very clinical and took our chances when we could, and that saw two breakaway tries for Heather Fisher and Emily Scarratt.
“We now know the job we have to do tomorrow, which is to defeat Switzerland and book our place in the semi-finals. And then our goal is to finish top, to put us in the best possible position for the Rugby World Cup qualifier in Moscow.”
