The stars of England’s men’s and women’s Sevens teams are visiting Grasshoppers RFC in Osterley next Wednesday (May 9) during a day-long festival of seven-a-side and touch rugby.
Girls and boys from primary and secondary schools across London will play sevens in the morning and take tips from England’s women international players including Rachael Burford and Alice Richardson from Richmond, and Wasps’ Sarah McKenna.
England's men - who include the likes of HSBC Sevens World Series top try-scorer Dan Norton - will be there early in the afternoon.
College and university teams will have a sevens tournament of their own during the afternoon and in the evening it’s the turn of adult players to give touch rugby a go in a special event organised by the RFU’s Touch London programme.
Players of all abilities are welcome to turn up and take part in the adults’ touch rugby, the fun and socially-driven version of the game.
England’s men are getting ready for the prestigious Marriott London Sevens, the final leg of this year’s HSBC Sevens World Series, while England's Women will compete in the third IRB Challenge Cup Sevens of the season. All the action will be at Twickenham Stadium on the weekend of May 12-13.
"This is a great opportunity to showcase the sport of seven-a-side rugby to schools from around London," said Pete Ward of the RFU.
"Sevens will be part of the Olympic Games from 2016 onwards and interest is growing all the time. Both sevens and touch are fun and easy to get started in, even if you have never handled a rugby ball before."
Food and drink will be available at the club and the organisers are encouraging anyone who would like to meet the England players, grab an autograph or ask a question to come along on the day.
The England women’s squad will be at Grasshoppers (MacFarlane Lane, off Syon Lane, Osterley, Middlesex, TW7 5PN) from 11am to 12 midday, and the men will be there from 1.50 to 2.50pm.
