- Worcester win RFU National U17 Cup
- Plate, Bowl and Shield also decided
The RFU National Under 17 competition finals were played at Worcester Warriors’ Sixways Stadium on Sunday (May 6) and the home-town team were among the victors.
Worcester won the top-tier National U17 Cup with a 17-6 defeat of Matson in the final, which was a hard-fought match including a red card to each team in the second half.
Tries from wing David Serafina and number eight Tom Gretton edged Worcester into a 10-6 lead by half time.
Replacement wing Will Thompson sealed Worcester’s win with their third try after the break which was converted by hooker James Gunther.
Bishop’s Stortford took the National U17 Plate title with a 42-24 win over Doncaster. The Hertfordshire side made a good start and though their Yorkshire opponents came back strongly the margin was comfortable by the end.
In the National U17 Bowl final, a bigger, stronger Heathfield & Waldron side got the better of Shrewsbury, winning 53-23 although the beaten team contributed to the good, open rugby.
The first final of the day, for the National U17 Shield, ended with Dorking from Surrey as 20-8 winners over Moseley. The Birmingham club were on top in the first half but Dorking played well in the second and scored two late tries to seal the victory.
