Springbok World Cup winning captain John Smit will lead the Barbarians when they open their summer tour against England at Twickenham on Sunday.

Coach John Kirwan said, “We have several natural leaders in the squad but with John's track record of captaincy at the highest levels of the game he was the obvious choice to lead us on this tour.”

England and the Barbarians contest the Killik Cup this Sunday with a truly international flavour to the visiting squad. The number of nationalities represented on the Barbarians three-match summer tour has been extended to 12 with the recruitment of 58-times capped Wallaby Mark Chisholm and fellow lock, Italy's Cornelius van Zyl.

Other additions since the provisional squad was announced are Casey Laulala, Heinke van der Merwe, Francois Louw and Ernst Joubert. Among those sidelined by injury are Stephen Jones and Schalk Brits

The tour opener against England on May 27 is followed by assignments against Ireland in Gloucester and Wales at the Millennium Stadium. The Barbarians defeated all three countries in their most recent fixtures against them.
