Under 16 county season ready to kick off

  • England Under 16 selection starts with county matches
  • Divisional selectors out in force

The start of the selection process for this season’s England Under 16 team will begin later this month with inter-county matches across the country.

The first matches will take place on October 14 with Sussex v Essex and Surrey v Middlesex in London & SE division and Devon v Cornwall in the South West.

The Midlands selectors will attend two Super Sunday events at Luctonians on November 4 and Broadtsreet RFC near Coventry on November 18 where all six Midlands counties will be in action.

The North will have three festivals at Sedbergh School on October 28, Woodhouse Grove School on November 4 and Durham School on November 11, where players will have the chance to impress the divisional selectors.

Development weekends and trials follow across the four divisions in December ahead of the Development Weekend at Broadstreet from February 1-3.

There will be two matches at Broadstreet on February 3 with North v South West at 11am and London & SE v Midlands at 1pm.

Training camps will then follow in February for the England Under 16 squad and the two sides that will take part in the annual Wellington Festival at Wellington College in Berkshire from March 30 to April 5.

England Under 16s will host Italy Under 17s and play Wales Under 16s at venues and on dates in April to be confirmed.

November 4: Festival 2 (Woodhouse Grove School) – Cheshire v Lancashire, Yorkshire v CND. November 11: Festival 3 (Durham School) – Cheshire v Yorkshire, Lancashire v CND. December 8-9: Divisional development sessions.

Midlands Division: October 16: North Midlands v Warwickshire (Redditch RFC), 17: Staffordshire v NLD, 18: Leicestershire v East Midlands. November 4: Super Sunday 1 (Luctonians)– North Midlands v Staffordshire, NLD v East Midlands, Leicestershire v Warwickshire. 18: Super Sunday 2  (Broadstreet)– fixtures TBC. December 16: Midlands Trial.
