Portsmouth charity match in memory of Jack Segust

17 September 2012

  • University to face the Solent Barbarians in Portsmouth
  • Popular student rugby player to be remembered

The second annual Portsmouth University v Solent Barbarians charity match will be played on Wednesday 19 September in memory of Jack Segust, who died earlier this year in a tragic accident at a golf club in Herefordshire.

Jack, 21, was a University of Portsmouth Rugby Football Club member and Portsmouth university student who also played for Ledbury RFC.

The match staged by the University of Portsmouth RFC at the US Portsmouth Burnaby Road ground will raise funds for three charities: Midlands Air Ambulance, Help for Heroes and Building Schools for Africa.

Entry will be £2 for students and £4 for adults. There will also be a raffle with lots of great prices including an England signed shirt.

Tom Hankey, the Jack Segust Memorial Cup Event Organiser, said: “Clubs are defined by the people who make up their membership and Jack represented all that was best about UPRFC.

“If there is one word that summed Jack up it was ‘character’. His memorable, full-of-zest personality, always looking on the bright side with a cheeky smile - and also his resolve, wholeheartedness, courage and determination his performances on the pitch personified.

“Jack was always smiling; so the club felt what better way to remember him than by running out on the pitch, playing a game and competing with smiles on our faces.”

In addition to the main event, the evening will include performances by the award-winning University Show Choir, Dance and Cheerleading clubs.

All comers are welcome for an evening in memory of Jack and in support of three worthwhile causes that will also showcase University of Portsmouth sport at its best.
