There were mixed results for England age grade sides this weekend as both the Under 19s and Under 17s took on their French counterparts in Givors, France.

The Under 19s won their game 22-6 with tries coming from James Chisholm, Nathan Earle and Tom Collins, while the Under 17s fell to a 38-25 defeat, their tries coming from Matt Blandford, Lucas Slowik, Henry Cheeseman and Lewis Boyce.

RFU Professional Player Development Manager John Fletcher, who is responsible for the U15 – U19 player development programme, was delighted with both sides and said: "The U17s matched the French in all areas and had opportunities to win the game.

“On reflection the French were deserved winners as they had more threat in the backs and we dropped off too many tackles. They scored last play when we were pushing to try and win the game."

He added: "The U19s played really well and deserved to win a very physical game. The French have their players in their national centre from Monday to Thursday in the U19 year and they looked organised and caused us problems when they had the ball.”

"It was a really good weekend for the players to play in two competitive games and it gave myself and Peter Walton from the England U18s, Ian Peel and Nick Walshe from the U20s coaches and Saxons head coach Jon Callard to spend some time together."
