Colts rugby feast wraps up season

27 April 2013

  • Rugby bonanza on North West finals day
  • Middlesbrough stage cross-border finale

Colts rugby enthusiasts have a treat in store over the coming weeks, starting on Sunday (April 28, 2013) at Sandbach RUFC and Eccles RUFC.

The two clubs are staging the finals of the Raging Bull Colts League Senior and Junior Cup competitions, with each of the competitions featuring a five-match programme starting at 10.30am and concluding at 4.30pm.

Only unbeaten Lymm of the Senior League champions are involved at Sandbach, where the host club are represented in the Plate final against Marple, while in the Junior Cup, Eccles have the benefit of a good cheer from the home crowd when they take on Altrincham Kersal in the Vase final.

Tradition insists that another day of wall-to-wall, high-calibre entertainment is in store as the cream of Lancashire’s young talent goes on display.

The success of two teams which have identified themselves as being among the best Junior Colts sides in the country, Warrington and Manchester, has forced the Lancashire Cup organisers to re-arrange their plans.

The pair will be competing in the finals of the National Under 17 Competition at Stourbridge RFC on May 5, the same day as the Lancashire finals. The Lancashire Under 17 Cup final has now been switched to later in the week, Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Fylde RFC, as a curtain-raiser to the Bill Beaumont Cup tie between Lancashire at Yorkshire.

The other two Cup finals, the Under 18 and Under 19 showpieces, will go ahead at Ansdell as scheduled on Sunday week (May 5) although kick-off times have been adjusted. The Joe McDonough Under 18 Cup final between Rochdale and Rossendale will kick-off at 1pm and the Under 19 Frank Morgan Under 19 Cup final involving Southport and Preston Grasshoppers will now start at 3pm.

Wrapping up a busy conclusion to another hectic season of Colts rugby in the North West will be the annual cross-border tournament, the Raging Bull Cock-o-the-North Under I9 Challenge Finals tournament, which is being staged this season by Middlesbrough RUFC on Sunday, May 12.

That event is split into four sections, with Wharfedale v Percy Park getting the programme underway at 11.00am in the Challenge Trophy. Wilmslow v Penrith follow up at 12.30pm in the Challenge Shield, with Billingham and Preston Grasshoppers contesting the Challenge  Bowl at 2pm and the Challenge Cup concluding the afternoon’s entertainment at 3.30pm when Doncaster take on Lymm.
