Following the first ever streaming of a professional rugby union game through Twitter, the RFU Championship will once again be broadcasting through the social media site, this time covering Nottingham and Bedford Blues’ semi-final legs.
Earlier this month, viewers were able to watch Cornish Pirates vs Jersey RFC through @RFUChampionship following a public vote to decide which game was broadcast. The feedback received through the social media site was so positive that the RFU has decided to show both legs of Nottingham and Bedford Blues’ semi-final, while Sky Sports will broadcast both legs of the clash between Newcastle Falcons and Leeds Carnegie.
As with the game in Penzance, viewers will be able to share their thoughts on the games via Twitter and vote for their RFU Championship Man of the Match.
The response last time was fantastic – Shaw
Commenting on the streaming, RFU Head of Digital Nick Shaw said: “The response we received last time was fantastic. Viewers loved being able to watch the game whilst out and about on their phone or iPad and given the importance of these games, it was a straightforward decision to continue the streaming for the knock-out stages.
“The RFU Championship is really carving out a space in technological innovation, seen in the European competitions employing RefCam this weekend, which was used for the first time in the second tier. We hope the continuation of live Twitter streaming will also prove to be as popular.”
Nottingham Rugby CEO Simon Beatham added: “We are excited to play a part in the social media innovation as it will help enhance the viewing experience of fans in the stands at Meadow Lane. Spectators can get action replays and running stats instantaneously on their phones while revelling in the stadium atmosphere and watching history play out before their eyes.
“In the Championship we have embraced the technological advancements to give spectators a unique perspective on the game and bring them close to the action. I’m sure there will be some very keen eyes on us and Bedford in Leeds and Newcastle as well and the wider rugby public across the UK.”
