Exiles ready for new chapter

19 August 2013

  • New clubhouse opening for Birmingham Exiles at Elmdon, Friday, August 23
  • Opening ceremony will also feature touch, rugby and barbecue

Birmingham Exiles will officially open their new headquarters at Elmdon with a match against a Greater Birmingham XV on Friday, August 23 (7.30pm).

The Exiles made the short move from their previous home at Bickenhill as part of a deal with Birmingham International Airport.

The Bickenhill site was close to a new runway extension at the airport, which led to the rugby club being relocated to the former Birmingham Civil Service ground at Elmdon.

The Exiles occupy part of the Elmdon site, which had been derelict for almost three years, where they have two full size pitches, a training pitch and a refurbished clubhouse.

They also secured £16,078 from the RFU Capital Investment Programme towards the £59,700 costs of installing training floodlights at the new ground.

The floodlights will be switched on during Friday's opening ceremony, which will be attended by the Mayor of Solihull.

There will be a curtain-raiser touch rugby match at 6.45pm involving the Exiles' junior players and there will be a barbecue throughout the evening for supporters and new visitors to Elmdon.
