Two new faces come into the England Counties squad ahead of their match against France Federale on Friday evening at Ealing Trailfinders (7pm).

Blaydon lock Chris Wearmouth and Richmond’s No 8, JP Attlee, replace James Inglis (Esher) who is unavailable and Joe Burton (Loughborough Students) who is in action for England Students against France Universities (Richmond Athletic, 7.30pm).

The England Counties went down 20-30 to the Ireland Club XV two weeks ago despite reducing the home side’s 12 point lead to 23-20 in the second half.

Wearmouth’s memories of the men in green are however more positive having played and scored in the Counties 34-16 win over Ireland at Preston Grasshoppers last year.

“That was an incredible match to be part of,” remembers Wearmouth, “Crossing the line in the last play of the game was a once in a lifetime feeling but it was an intense game.  The Irish are a physical and imposing side.

“It was always going to be a tough ask for the players going over there but hopefully we can put right any wrongs in the match against France.”

The Counties squad had limited time together before flying to Ireland, meeting for the first time on the Wednesday before playing on the Friday night.

“There is real quality in this squad and they will be much stronger for having the experience of playing together.  I’m really looking forward to joining up with them tomorrow,” said Wearmouth.

The Blaydon lock also represented England Counties on tour to East Africa in June 2012 where he played in all three fixtures.

“We did a lot of good work off the field with amazing opportunities to impact and develop rugby in the counties we visited through the outreach and coaching,” he added, “It was a very memorable and special experience for everyone involved.

“From the tour and last year’s match against Ireland, I am familiar with the coaches and some of the players so it will be easy to fit back in.

“Ealing Trailfinders is a quality ground and the Friday night fixture should attract a decent crowd.  There is no doubt that the French will really be up for it but I think home advantage will be a big factor.”
