Church Stretton becomes Midlands' newest club

Church Stretton, the newest rugby club in the Midlands, will play their first-ever match at home against Shropshire rivals Bishops Castle on August 20 (7pm).

Church Stretton currently have 40 players who have trained regularly throughout this month ahead of a programme of friendly matches arranged for the forthcoming season.

Martyn Longhurst, a local school teacher who has coached North Midlands youth teams, has been appointed director of rugby with Ben Speake elected as captain.

Church Stretton will play their home matches at Church Stretton School's ground at Shrewsbury Road.

The new club will play in colours of gold and green and will incorporate the town's badge.

The club has been established with the help and support of the RFU, Church Stretton & District Club, Church Stretton Town Football Club, Church Stretton Leisure Centre and Church Stretton Town Council.

Training sessions at Church Stretton will be held on Thursday evenings during August. Further details are available from Barrie Oxtoby on 01694 723199.
