- England Women will face Wales in final Pool game on Sunday
- Barry Maddocks' side looking to defend European Sevens title
Reigning European champions England Women finished day one of the first leg of the European Sevens Series in Brive unbeaten on Saturday.
Barry Maddocks’ side, who are preparing for the Rugby World Cup Sevens later this month, recorded wins over Germany, Russia, Portugal and the Netherlands to maintain a clean sheet. They will finish their pool matches against Wales on Sunday morning before hoping to contest the semi-finals.
England kicked off the day’s proceedings well with a comprehensive 34-0 win over Germany with captain Michaela Staniford claiming a brace of tries.
Next-up was Russia, the side that England last lost to in the World Series in May, and once again the Russians were in impressive form leading England 5-0 at the break. Only a second-half touchdown for Emily Scarratt and an Alice Richardson conversion handed England the win.
Portugal posed less of a threat with Maddocks’ side running in six tries courtesy of Kat Merchant, Claire Allan, Marlie Packer, Staniford and Joanne Watmore who scored twice.
In the final game of the day England took on the Netherlands and finished off well running out 31-10 victors. Rachael Burford, Merchant, Staniford (2) and Scarratt bagged the tries.
