England Sevens stars Dan Norton and Sam Edgerley have given Ben Ryan’s side a timely boost as they head into the Rugby World Cup Sevens weekend by re-signing to the England Rugby Sevens programme for a further two years.

Norton, who is currently in Russia preparing for this weekend’s World Cup Sevens, was the HSBC’s World Sevens Series top try scorer this season with 52 touchdowns. He was also named the England Sevens Player of the Year by the Rugby Players’ Association just last month.

Sevens Head Coach Ryan recruited Norton to the Sevens programme on a full-time contract in 2011 and in two years the Bristol winger has made massive strides in the international game.

Ryan said: “I first spotted Dan as a teenager and he showed tremendous potential back then. Since then he has blossomed, and in the last 12 months he has become one of the best wingers in world Sevens rugby.

“To be able to extend Dan’s contract to 2015 means we will all benefit and that is fantastic news for Sevens rugby in England.”

Like Norton, Edgerley has been a key player for England this season, helping his side to a World Series win in Wellington as well as third place finishes in the Glasgow and London legs of the World Series. He was also a member of the squad that won the first leg of the European Grand Prix Series in Lyon earlier this month.

Ryan added: “Over the last 12 months Sam has really excelled and still being just 21 he really does have an exciting future ahead of him. He is close to being one of our fittest squad members, he has a tremendous turn of pace and excellent skill development.

“Although I know he was disappointed not to make the Rugby World Cup Sevens squad, Sam has a promising future as an international Sevens player ahead of him.”

England kick off their RWC 7s campaign on Friday against Portugal, kick off 2.12pm BST. You can watch it live on www.rwcsevens.com.
