Brighton chasing Twickenham cup treble as RFU Cups reach regional final stage

14 March 2013

  • North Walsham, Maidstone and Wymondham host London finals
  • Brighton, Cantabrigians and Farnham are the visitors

Brighton face a tricky trip to North Walsham Vikings in Saturday’s regional final of the RFU Intermediate Cup as the Blues continue their pursuit of a rare cup hat-trick.

Brighton are seeking to emulate Hartpury College from Gloucestershire, who are the only club to have won the RFU’s Junior Vase, Senior Vase and Intermediate Cup, achieving the feat in the three years from 2007 to 2009.

Brighton won the Junior Vase at Twickenham Stadium in 2009 with a 32-20 defeat of Liskeard-Looe and returned a year later to add the Senior Vase, beating Dunlop 32-3.

Having progressed up the rugby ladder to London 2 South East, Brighton now compete in the Intermediate Cup for clubs at Level Seven in the league structure.

Brighton knocked out Portsmouth 52-12 in the Intermediate Cup regional semi-final on February 2, having earlier eliminated London Cornish, Tottonians and Warlingham.

The Blues go into the tie in good heart after a nine-try league win at Old Dunstonians in London 2 South East last weekend, although snow in Sussex has disrupted training in the meantime.

And Brighton’s loose-head prop Stav Economiou will miss the cup fixture as he is off to Paphos to play for Cyprus against Bulgaria.

North Walsham from Norfolk, in common with their opponents, are top of their league in London 2 North East.

They came through to this stage with a 13-0 win away to 2011 RFU Intermediate Cup finalists Aylesford Bulls.

And the match kicking off at 2.30pm at North Walsham’s Scottow ground will be followed by the RBS 6 Nations match between Wales and England being screened in the Viking Bar.

The draw for home advantage in the national semi finals has favoured the London & South East qualifiers, who will each be at home to opponents from the South West in the last four.

It all culminates in a finals day at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, May 4.
