Rugby union for women and girls in East Yorkshire reached an important milestone last week when a three-week coaching programme culminated in the first district Under 13 festival at Driffield RUFC.

The opportunity of coaching in the schools and an exciting competition pathway which offered the chance to progress to the Yorkshire Finals and a possible Twickenham appearance prompted a number of schools to grasp the chance to be involved.

Schools involved in the programme were Wolfreton, Howden, Hornsea, Driffield and two of the schools included in the RFU All Schools Programme, Kelvin Hall School and St Mary’s College.

The Driffield festival included eight teams, six schools and over 80 girls and while conditions were cold and windy, early apprehensions quickly gave way to the enjoyment of all aspects of the game, with each team developing noticeably as the competition unfolded.

The final between Driffield and Wolfreton was a terrific and competitive encounter with Wolfreton coming out on top to be East Yorkshire Under 13 Girls Winners for 2013, but more importantly, the positive response from teachers, players and spectators after the event will hopefully make this an annual event in East Yorkshire.

The event created a number of excited girl rugby players, many of whom enrolled for a Development Day at Driffield RUFC yesterday.

Wolfreton, Kelvin Hall and St Mary’s now go forward to the Yorkshire Finals at Pontefract on Friday, March 22.
