QEGS Wakefield looking for Warwick double

Rugby staff at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Wakefield have been around the block too many times to read too much into a single rugby result, but they are entitled to hope that the win for their Under 13s at the Rosslyn Park Schools Sevens will prove to be a good omen.

QEGS Under 15s will be in action in the Daily Mail RBS Under 15 Cup on Saturday (March 23, 2013) when they meet Warwick School in the final and after the Under 13s 21-19 win over Warwick School today (Tuesday, March 19) at Rosslyn Park, the Yorkshire boys are now looking to complete a memorable double over their Midlands rivals.

For that to happen, however, QEGS will need to step up a gear from their narrow semi-final victory over Bishop Heber, when they were unable to replicate their high-quality display in the quarter-final.

“It was a tight game in which we didn’t perform was well as we would have liked and it could have gone either way,” said Coach Trevor Barker. “We’re hoping that acts as a wake-up call ahead of the final.”

One bonus for Barker is that his son Joe, a Leeds Carnegie and former QEGS player now recuperating from a groin injury, has been helping with the coaching of both the Under 13 and Under 15 teams at Wakefield.

“Joe was in the team that reached the final and was beaten 16-3 by Bedford School in 2006, so he knows plenty about the Daily Mail RBS Schools Cup,” said Barker Senior. “He’s really enjoyed working at school and having him here has been a big help. He keeps us up to speed with current theories of how the game should be played. You have to keep moving forward.”

Coincidentally, Barker Junior was in the last QEGS Under 13 side to win at Rosslyn Park – the squad of 2006!

While Barker gets support from his son, the team can expect a good cheer from the Wakefield contingent who will be on the road on Saturday. A dozen coaches have been chartered, other support will be travelling by car and train and judging from activity on the social networks, a bumper QEGS turnout is assured.

And ambitions for Saturday? Says Barker: “Our defeat by Bedford when we were last at Twickenham followed our worst performance of that season. Hopefully this team got that out of the way in the semis.”
