- Tom Mitchell returns for eighth leg of HSBC Sevens World Series
- Experienced forward James Rodwell previews penultimate leg in Glasgow
Tom Mitchell returns to the England Sevens squad after a five-month absence for this weekend’s penultimate leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Glasgow.
The centre from West Sussex joined England’s lengthy casualty list when he broke an ankle in Dubai last November but is back in action at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday.
Mitchell, 23, takes over from Richard De Carpentier, who played in the Hong Kong and Tokyo legs of the series before being recalled by Worcester Warriors, in the only change to the squad.
England kick off against New Zealand (12:42), who they faced in last season’s Glasgow final, then face hosts Scotland (16:10) and Portugal (17:53) in their Pool B matches on Day One.
“Tom’s been a very bright light for us since making his debut last season and was in that starting side against New Zealand in last year’s Glasgow final so it’s good to have him back,” said Head Coach Ben Ryan.
“We’ve probably had more players to pick from than we’ve had all season and it’s good to have guys returning even though there are still a handful more on their way back.

“Over the last month we’ve trained hard and worked hard with some really tough sessions. We’ve got a very committed group of players and we’re looking forward to getting back out on the field and making it count.
“We thoroughly enjoy going up to Scotland and had a good tournament in Glasgow in 2012 when we played some of the best stuff of the season in the run to the final with wins over South Africa and Fiji on the way, and it’s good to have a short flight up there rather than going halfway round the world.”
The Glasgow leg is followed by the Marriott London Sevens on May 11-12 and a strong finish to the campaign will give England a good platform to prepare for this summer’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow.
They travel with Dan Norton in prime form. The Bristol-based wing has touched down 37 tries this season and two more would make him England’s most prolific scorer in a single World Series, overtaking teammate Mathew Turner’s 38 touchdowns last season.
This weekend’s Glasgow Sevens is live on Sky Sports HD1 from 10:15 on Saturday, behind the red button from 14:00 and on Sky Sports HD4 from 10:15 on Sunday.
