As the countdown continues to the Rugby World Cup Sevens England Women are determined to up the ante in this weekend’s opening round of the European Series in Brive.

England Sevens captain for the first of two European tournaments this month, Staniford says that with just over a month to go until the last ever Rugby World Cup Sevens England must start to reach their peak.

“The squad is really pleased with our progress since coming together in January but we also realise that now’s the time to put the foot on the accelerator even more so,” said the Wasps player, who led England to London Sevens glory earlier this month.

“We have all had different journeys to get to where we are now; from not having played much Sevens rugby before to changing positions to coming back from injuries as well as the increased training loads and massive amounts of learning. We’ve all made such progress and all should be very proud of that but we are now at the stage where we want to be putting in the finishing touches. We really want to put a marker down before the World Cup.”

England head to Brive as reigning European champions but face a tough pool where they will take on Germany, Russia, Portugal, the Netherlands and Wales.

“England will of course be going to win every game but we want a tough pool because we want to play the best teams. I definitely can’t see any of our games being easy. Russia and Netherlands have shown how threatening they can be, especially with the ball in space, and we also know that the likes of Wales are talented players through the Six Nations. It is certainly going to be a tough weekend of international rugby.”
